The Mentawai Islands.
A chain of around seventy islands in the Indian Ocean, a few hours by sea from Padang on the west coast of Sumatra. Most people who have heard of them are surfers: the Mentawais have some of the most consistent waves in the world.
Away from the breaks it’s rainforest, reef and small villages. Much of Siberut, the largest island, is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the Mentawai people still keep traditions that go back thousands of years. Awera is one of the smaller islands in the chain.
