Palms meeting clear water on Awera Island, Mentawai, from above

NAWA

Our philosophy

Recovery isn’t about fixing what’s broken. It’s about returning to what’s whole.

Four weeks on a remote island, where the ocean, the quiet and trauma-informed care all work on the same thing: a nervous system that can finally settle. Nobody here is trying to help you escape yourself. The point is to come home.

The name

nawa Sanskrit · nine

Nine: the eight points of the compass, and the centre.

Not one direction. All of them, held in balance, with the centre intact.

NNEESESSWWNW

Recovery isn’t finding one direction. It’s finding all of them again — and returning to your own centre.

Our philosophy

NAWA is about finding your direction again.

High-functioning people don’t often look like they need help. They meet their deadlines. They show up. They perform. The problem lives underneath all of that.

When addiction, trauma, burnout or destructive patterns take over, life can become very small — even when it looks full from the outside.

Recovery isn’t simply about removing a substance or changing a behaviour.

It’s about rebuilding a life.

  1. 01Reconnecting with the body.
  2. 02Understanding the mind.
  3. 03Facing what has been avoided.
  4. 04Repairing relationships.
  5. 05Finding purpose.
  6. 06Learning how to sit with discomfort without running from it.
  7. 07And ultimately, finding your way back to yourself.

Beneath the surface

The problem isn’t only the substance.

For a lot of people, the drink or the drug was never really the problem. It was the fix. A way to calm a system that wouldn’t calm down, take the edge off something painful, or fill a gap nothing else seemed to reach.

Things start to shift when the question changes.

How do I quit? What am I actually looking for?

All directions

There are different parts of us that need attention.

Different directions our lives can move in. Physical, psychological, emotional, relational and spiritual.

When those parts become disconnected, we suffer.

When they begin to come back into alignment, something changes.

NAWA isn’t about becoming someone new.

It’s about returning to the person underneath everything that got in the way.

Find your direction.Return to yourself.

This is not rehab

A lot of recovery still runs on models built thirty years ago. We work from what's known now about trauma, the nervous system and identity, on an island that does half the work for you.

01

Built around you.

No lectures, no anonymous circles, no one-size-fits-all template. The programme is trauma-informed, nervous system-focused, and built around the individual.

02

Learning to steady yourself.

The aim isn't sobriety as an end point. It's leaving able to settle your own nervous system without reaching for anything.

03

An island doing the heavy lifting.

Jungle, ocean and not much else. There's no bar to walk to and no city to disappear into, and that's the point.

The core of NAWA

Calm first. Then the work.

Everything we do starts with the nervous system.

If your body has been in survival mode for years, understanding why rarely changes much on its own. So before anyone is asked to dig into trauma, rethink who they are or change how they behave, we help their body feel safe enough to do it.

01

Surf and ocean.

Time in the water teaches breath, rhythm and attention without anyone lecturing you about it. Surfing’s optional. The ocean isn’t.

02

Nature immersion.

No traffic, no notifications, no noise. Give the body a few days of that and it starts to reset.

03

Trauma-informed work.

Looking at why the behaviour started, not just how to stop it.

04

Breath and body.

Learning to stay with a feeling in your body instead of reaching for a way out of it.

05

Community.

Four people, never more, doing the same work at the same time. You won’t be doing this on your own.

None of this is an activity schedule. It’s what makes the deeper work possible.

How the four weeks work →

Wholeness

You’re not becoming somebody new.

You’re not aiming for perfect. Or happy all the time. Or never struggling again.

What you’re aiming for is quieter than that: slowly getting back the parts of yourself you had to put away just to get through.

Over four weeks you practise sitting with discomfort, get back in touch with your body, build relationships that are honest, and start putting together a life you don’t need to escape from.

THE ISLAND THE WORK you

Two circles

The island.
The work.
And you, where they meet.

  • The island

The days run on a slower clock, and there's nowhere to go at night. Your body usually starts to slow down before the programme has properly begun.

  • The work

One-to-ones every day, group sessions four times a week, guided writing, and a small team who know this work well.

  • You

The change happens where the two overlap. It's where you find out who you are without whatever you've been using to cope.

NAWA is about returning.

Not to who you were before all this. To the person who was there underneath it the whole time.
